Right now the 1st grade classes are studying Africa- it is one of my favorite units to carry over into the art room. This year I had the students paint African Savanna’s at sunset. We first talked about warm colors, and then talked about how to apply the warm colored paint on paper so it looks like a sunset. Then we talked about how it is hard to see the details of something if there is bright light behind it, they learned the word silhouette, and they painted the silhouettes of african animals, and trees on top of the sunsets. They had lots of fun making these!
