Each year the 1st grade classes study Insects. This year in art I gave each child a photo of an insect and had them do a line drawing of their insect (really showing details!). Next they outlined their drawings with sharpie. Our previous lesson had been about the color wheel, and how primary colors mix together to make all of the other colors. They could only use primary colored oil pastels to color in their insects, but they could smudge them together to make secondary colors. They then used liquid watercolors to fill in the space around their insects. They did an amazing job!
