The second grade classes spend the winter studying the polar regions. I decided that it would be fun to do an Aurora Borealis art project with them. We talked about how the Aurora Borealis happen. They then made icy landscapes for the Aurora Borealis to float above. To create their hills they cut them out of white paper and used cool colored water colors to paint them. They then glued their hills onto a black piece of paper and created the Aurora Borealis effect by pulling pastels onto the paper. They used a piece of paper with a wavy edge to block out the pastels while pulling them creating one crisp edge and another wispy side.
