As the holidays approached I wanted to send the kids home with things that they could present as gifts. I decided to do Nutcracker paintings with the 2nd graders. We first looked at different Nutcrackers and then talked about the history of them. Then we looked at them shape by shape and tried to draw them. The students could make them in any form that they wanted to although most kept it pretty traditional. Once they drew the Nutcrackers, they then outlined them and filled them in with watercolors. Once that was done they made snowflakes with oil pastels and crayons and then painted over them with cool colored watercolors. While the water colors were still wet we sprinkled salt on to the backgrounds to give them an icy feeling. I think they look fantastic!
