5th Grade portraits

Each year the fifth grade students start off the year by writing an autobiographical piece about themselves.  I have them do the art version of that (a self portrait) in the art room.  I have them break down the parts of a face and practice each part separately to start.  We start with the nose (as everyone seems scared of them!) and then move on to the mouth, then eyes, then ears and hair- and then we sit with a mirror and try to put all of the parts together into a face.  It takes a lot of measuring and sometimes a few tears- but in the end this unit is worth it.  The fifth graders leave feeling SO proud of their new skills!  This year we made pencil drawings first and then I made photocopies of those and then let them layer color, emotion, and bits of their writing pieces into the image.  I love what they came up with.  For now, Here are their pencil drawings.
